Mitchell T. Munson, OD, FAAO, Diplomate ABO, ’86

Dr. Munson grew up in Placentia, CA, and upon graduation from SCCO, moved to Colorado with his wife and classmate, Dr. Susan Brunnett. The couple has owned and operated a successful group practice in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, since 1988. He is a member and past-President of the Colorado Optometric Association (COA), a member and past-President of the American Optometric Association (AOA), a past-President of the Southwest Council of Optometry, a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), and Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry (ABO). He has received the COA’s Young Optometrist, Optometrist of the Year and Distinguished Service Awards

Following his term as AOA President in 2014, Dr. Munson accepted a seat on the World Council of Optometry’s Governing Board. He has lectured at various paraoptometric conferences across the country and has engaged young scientists in the Douglas County School system, where he has coordinated and performed cow eye dissections for thousands of second grade students over the past 26 years. He has been a guest speaker at the Southern California College of Optometry on four different occasions, the most recent and memorable visit in May of 2013 when he was invited to present the annual commencement address and to receive college’s Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Munson was the recipient of the college’s Homer A. Nelson Award; and he joined his wife, Susan, in receiving the American Academy of Optometry’s Julius F. Neumiller Award upon graduation. As such, he and Susan have chosen to demonstrate their loyalty and affection for exceptional student scholarship by establishing the Drs. Munson and Brunnett Endowed Scholarship (2013). He remains connected to the institution, writing recommendations for deserving students and frequently endorsing the college as one of the premier optometric institutions in the nation.

Dr. Munson received his Bachelor of Science, Zoology, Cum Laude, from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona; his Bachelor of Science, Visual Science, Cum Laude, as well as his Doctor of Optometry from the Southern California College of Optometry. He enjoys golf, automobiles and fly fishing. He and Dr. Brunnett still enjoy their involvement in organized optometry but are looking forward to welcoming their first grandchildren (twins) in just a few weeks.
