Dr. David Bright received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1976, preceded by a B.S. in Visual Science from SCCO in 1974. He began teaching at SCCO in 1977, serving as clinical instructor in a number of diverse outreach clinics. He acted as instructor of record from 1989 to 1994 for the third-year ocular pharmacology course. He has extensive experience with optometry in the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), having worked at the Los Angeles Outpatient Clinic from 1978 to 1983 and at the West Los Angeles facility since 1990. He currently serves in three capacities at the DVA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLAHS): Department Chair for Optometry, GLAHS; Chief, Optometry Clinic, West LA Healthcare Center, GLAHS; and Chief, Optometry Section, GLAHS. He presently holds the faculty rank of tenured professor at SCCO.

Dr. Bright has authored or co-authored a number of published articles, and has contributed to three optometric textbooks: Clinical Medicine in Optometric Practice, Clinical Ocular Pharmacology – fourth edition, and Primary Eyecare in Systemic Disease – second edition. Dr. Bright lectures nationally and internationally in the areas of ocular pharmacology, ocular disease, dermatology, and HIV/AIDS. He has received the "Eagle Award" from the editor of the Journal of the American Optometric Association three separate times, for the best article submitted by a VA optometrist. Dr. Bright served on the editorial board of Clinical Eye and Vision Care from 1993 to 2000, as well as acting as a referee/reviewer for the Journal of the American Optometric Association and Optometry and Visual Science.

Dr. Bright became a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in 1979 and is a member of the Ocular Disease Section of the AAO, the COA, the AOA, and the National Association of VA Optometrists.
