Peer Advice: Where to Study, Sip, and Recharge Near Campus

Your guide to surviving grad school, one sip at a time

Starting grad school can feel overwhelming at times, but something as basic as a cozy study space and a sweet treat can help make the long days a little more bearable. Having solid coffee/matcha shops close by can help make studying more enjoyable and satisfy those post-exam cravings.

After a year of trial, error, and plenty of caffeine, here are some of my favorite local spots that helped me survive through my first year:

Sip and Savor

Big tables • Cozy atmosphere • Craft drinks • Outlets

A favorite for group study sessions because of their large table. Instead of traditional matcha and coffee options, their drinks are more on the crafty side. If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll love it here! They have plenty of outlets and comfortable seating area.

Made Coffee

Reliable coffee • Quiet environment • Pastries

Consistently solid coffee and pastries, with plenty of table space to plug in and focus. Great for a quick break or a productive afternoon. This shop is in Downtown Fullerton and will be a great option if you want to study close to campus and return quickly to get to After Hours.

Vivot Cafe

Aesthetic • High-quality matcha • Open late • No outlets

This beautiful cafe is ideal for romanticizing the study. It gets busy during the afternoon, but the quality drinks and relaxing space make it worth a visit. This is the kind of space that can help you shift your mindset from “I have to study” to “I get to spend time with my thoughts and notes in a calming space.”

Little Ox

Open layout • Lots of natural light • Good coffee and matcha • Outlets

Perfect for a quiet morning or a light study session. This cafe is filled with natural light, which might seem like a small detail, but it makes a big difference. Personally, I feel more motivated and energized when I’m studying in a bright, sunlit space. There’s something about daylight that helps me feel more awake and focused even during long study stretches.

Okayama Bakery

Grab-and-go • Delicious matcha drinks • Yummy eats

No seating, but the drinks and baked goods are worth stopping for. A great option when you're short on time but still want something tasty and energizing. I personally like their banana cream matcha!

Bag of Cakes

Matcha einspanner • Spacious seating • Bright lighting • Outlets

This was my go-to after proficiencies and during long lab days. Their matcha einspanner is a standout, and the space is great for studying or relaxing. Excellent pastries, both savory and sweet.

Honorable Mention: Mobil Gas Station (across the street)

Takes EBT • Large energy drink selection • Affordable snacks

For those who prefer energy drinks, this spot has a surprising variety. Great for affordable, convenient caffeine and snacks during long days on campus. If you forget to pack lunch and need something in a pinch, they have lots of instant ramen J

Finding your favorite cafe is part of settling into grad school life. Whether you're recharging between classes or getting serious about studying, treating yourself to a cozy study spot will be one of the small ways you can take care for yourself during a busy year.
