Dr. James Shuler is a Physician Associate (PA) with more than 25 years of clinical experience spanning emergency medicine, urgent care, and neurosurgery. Originally from Syracuse, New York, he practiced as a PA for 21 years before relocating to Lynchburg, Virginia. Throughout his career, Dr. Shuler has remained committed to advancing the PA profession through clinical excellence, leadership, education, and mentorship.
Dr. Shuler currently practices full-time in neurosurgery at Lynchburg General Hospital, where he provides comprehensive care for patients with complex neurological conditions. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he developed and serves as Director of the Neurosurgery Fellowship Program for Physician Associates and Nurse Practitioners, helping prepare advanced practice providers for successful careers in neurosurgical practice.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Shuler served as Associate Program Director of the University of Lynchburg's Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program and as a faculty member in the PA program. His academic interests include leadership development, healthcare administration, PA education, curriculum design, and the professional advancement of physician associates. Through his combined roles as a clinician, educator, and administrator, Dr. Shuler is dedicated to preparing the next generation of healthcare leaders while promoting innovation and excellence in patient care.
