Education

After he received a B.S. in Respiratory Therapy from Salisbury University in 1999, he obtained his PA certificate from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY, in 2001. He went on to receive his master's degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and his Doctor of Medical Science from the University of Lynchburg in 2019.

One of his more notable accomplishments was the founding and development of the Wellnow Urgent Care Fellowship program in Syracuse, NY, that grew to over 100 PA and NP fellows and is now nationally accredited through the College of Urgent Care Medicine and the Urgent Care Association.

Biography

Dr. James Shuler has been practicing medicine as a physician associate (PA) for over 24 years and has extensive experience in emergency medicine, urgent care, and neurosurgery.  He is originally from Syracuse, New York, where he worked as a PA for 21 years before moving to Lynchburg, Virginia.  Dr. Shuler's focus is to advance the PA profession through education and clinical excellence.

Dr. Shuler currently works full-time in neurosurgery at Lynchburg General Hospital.  In addition to his clinical duties, he has developed and directs the neurosurgery fellowship program for PAs and NPs. Prior to working in neurosurgery, Dr. Shuler held a position as the Associate Program Director for the University of Lynchburg Doctor of Medical Science program and was a faculty member for the PA program.
