Laura Love, PA-C, PhD

 

Associate Professor

Education 

She began her medical career by attending the Medical University of South Carolina's Physician Associate (PA) Program. She went on to earn a Master of PA Studies degree, with a concentration in Physical Medicine and Pain Management. She then earned a Ph.D. in Health Sciences, with a concentration in Healthcare Administration. 

Biography 

Dr. Love is an Associate Professor and core faculty member in the Doctor of Medical Science Program. She teaches multiple courses in the program, with a focus on healthcare management, leadership, and administration. She serves on multiple committees within the department and the University. Dr. Love has worked in several areas of medicine over the years, including physical medicine and pain management, urgent care, and occupational medicine. Most recently, she owned and operated a medical practice specializing in care for Veterans. She continues to write medical options for the VA. She has dedicated most of her career to teaching PA students and graduate PAs. She was a core faculty member and Associate Program Director for the PA program at A.T. Still University in Mesa, Arizona. She taught for five years in the DMSc program at the University of Lynchburg (Virginia). She has also taught several mind-body medicine courses for the Ph.D. program at Saybrook University (California). Dr. Love is the author of a book and several articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. She has served as an invited speaker on wellness and medical topics at local, state, and international conferences. She is a peer reviewer for medical journal articles. She is an NCCPA-certified PA, licensed to practice medicine in Arizona.

James Shuler, PA-C, DMSc

 

Education

After he received a B.S. in Respiratory Therapy from Salisbury University in 1999, he obtained his PA certificate from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY, in 2001. He went on to receive his master's degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and his Doctor of Medical Science from the University of Lynchburg in 2019.

One of his more notable accomplishments was the founding and development of the Wellnow Urgent Care Fellowship program in Syracuse, NY, that grew to over 100 PA and NP fellows and is now nationally accredited through the College of Urgent Care Medicine and the Urgent Care Association.

Biography

Dr. James Shuler has been practicing medicine as a physician associate (PA) for over 24 years and has extensive experience in emergency medicine, urgent care, and neurosurgery.  He is originally from Syracuse, New York, where he worked as a PA for 21 years before moving to Lynchburg, Virginia.  Dr. Shuler's focus is to advance the PA profession through education and clinical excellence.

Dr. Shuler currently works full-time in neurosurgery at Lynchburg General Hospital.  In addition to his clinical duties, he has developed and directs the neurosurgery fellowship program for PAs and NPs. Prior to working in neurosurgery, Dr. Shuler held a position as the Associate Program Director for the University of Lynchburg Doctor of Medical Science program and was a faculty member for the PA program.

William "Trey" O Boyd, DMSc, PA-C

 

Biography

Dr. Boyd brings extensive experience in education to his role as an adjunct faculty member of the MBKU DMSc program, where he will be focused on the PA Education Concentration. He is also an associate professor and the associate director of Clinical Education for the Department of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies at Gardner-Webb University, where he earlier served as the Associate Program Director and Interim Director of Clinical Education.

Before coming to MBKU he was employed by the College of Health Sciences at the University of Lynchburg, VA where he was the Associate Program Director and Director of Postgraduate Medicine. He was also part of the founding faculty and later the Director of Clinical Education at Presbyterian College, Department of PA Studies. He was PA Faculty Attending and Provider at the Free Clinic of Central Virginia and the Shepherd Free Clinic. He also has experience in orthopedic surgery, where he still works.

After graduating from Presbyterian College with a B.S. in psychology with honors, he went on to earn his Master of Science in Medicine (MSM) from Trevecca Nazzarene University in 2013 before earning his Doctor of Medical Science, concentration in Medical Education and Leadership in 2019. Dr. Boyd is a member of, or has held leadership roles with multiple professional organizations, has several publications in the peer-reviewed literature, and is a peer reviewer for several academic journals. He enjoys cooking, watching sports, playing with his children, and hiking.
