When I first started pharmacy school, I thought I needed to have everything figured out from day one. I felt like I had to know all the answers, stay on top of every assignment, make friends immediately, and somehow balance school with the rest of my life. It didn't take long for me to realize that graduate school isn't about being perfect, it's about learning, growing, and becoming the person you're working toward.
One of the biggest things I've learned is that growth doesn't always look the way you expect it to. At first, I thought success meant always getting good grades or never feeling behind. But
over time, I realized some of my biggest moments of growth came from the things that challenged me the most. Learning how to ask for help, adjusting my study habits when something wasn't working, becoming more confident in myself, and realizing that it's okay not to know everything right away have all been just as valuable as anything I've learned in class.
There have definitely been exams that didn't go the way I hoped, moments where I felt overwhelmed, and days where I questioned whether I was capable. However looking back,
those moments were never signs that I wasn't cut out for pharmacy school, they were part of the process. Some of the biggest lessons I've learned didn't come from a textbook. They came from asking for help when I needed it, learning how to manage my time, adapting when things didn't go according to plan, and trusting myself even when I felt uncomfortable. Those lessons have helped me grow just as much as anything I've learned in the classroom.
As a peer advisor, one of the biggest pieces of advice I can give is to be patient with yourself. Celebrate the small wins, whether it's understanding a difficult concept, making a new friend, or simply making it through a challenging week. Those little victories add up over time.
Looking back, I wish I had spent less time worrying about whether I was doing everything "right" and more time appreciating the fact that I was learning every single day. Growth doesn't happen overnight, but it does happen when you keep showing up. One day you'll look back and realize just how far you've come.
Graduate school is challenging, but it's also one of the most rewarding experiences you'll have. Give yourself permission to make mistakes, learn from them, and keep moving forward. The goal isn't to be a perfect student. It's to become a confident, compassionate future pharmacist. Trust the process, and don't forget to enjoy the journey along the way.
